Chapter 14: Offline

The body gasped for breath as if it had been teetering on the brink of death and had just returned to the land of the living.

The black-robed cultists in the room stared blankly at this spectacle. Some of them didn’t even comprehend that the man before them had just experienced a brush with death. The fleeting moment of this life and death cycle was so swift that it could only be discerned with acute observation. They merely felt their dying “comrade’s” breath, for reasons unknown, abruptly stabilize and grow strong, which came as a profound surprise.

The very next moment, the man lying on the ground opened his eyes.

He seemed to have been nestled in darkness for so long that even the dimly lit oil lamps in the room appeared blinding. He blinked, adjusting to the light, and then gradually shifted his gaze, seemingly just noticing the three black-robed figures huddled around him.

“Thanks to the Lord’s blessings!” one of the younger black-robed cultists finally grasped the situation and exclaimed excitedly, “You’ve survived! I thought you would…”

“Wait! Something’s not right! Back off!” However, one cultist with a deep voice abruptly realized something. He hastily interrupted the others and, with a wary look, glared intensely at the man who had just awakened. As he stepped back, he declared in a menacing tone, “His breathing completely stopped just now, I’m absolutely sure… Something is amiss!”

Duncan eventually adjusted to his surroundings. The ringing in his ears gradually subsided, and he clearly saw the figures around him. His first reaction was — why am I still with these people when I wake up? And why am I still in the sewer?

Spirit walking should be random. When choosing a target, he had simply followed his instincts, pointing his finger at random. But he had never anticipated that both times he regained consciousness, he would find himself among these cultists. What kind of misfortune was this?

Almost instantly, he noticed the odd reactions of those around him. The next moment, he noticed the black robe he was wearing.

Duncan stayed quiet for a moment, and then realization struck.

In the previous cycle, he was the sacrificial offering by the cultists, and now, in the blink of an eye, he had become one of them—a “cultist” himself.

He indeed had a connection with these people.

“… Something is off!”

Just then, a low, hostile voice interrupted Duncan’s bewilderment post-“awakening.” He traced the sound and immediately locked eyes with a chilly, alert gaze.

The individual casting that chilly gaze continued to scrutinize him with a frosty stare, while the other two black-robed figures also seemed to awaken from their confusion. They quickly adopted defensive postures, cautiously retreating a few steps away from Duncan.

For a fleeting moment, Duncan was thrown off guard, coming to the sudden realization that he might have once again inhabited a deceased body.

He was essentially impersonating a corpse in the presence of these cultists!

The situation became clear, and the nervous responses of the cultists around him suddenly fell into place. Duncan’s mind kicked into overdrive.
